Peter L. Colasante is an attorney, building contractor, private pilot, and soon to be father. He spent his formative years on a homestead in central Florida, a place without the internet, where the most important skill was self-sufficiency. There on the outskirts of Alachua County, construction, repair, and building were synonyms for life; education was a concept that was only relevant in application.
Later on, those feelings drew Peter away from the abstractions of college and onto the job site. He started as laborer, performing demolition and cleaning, hauling endless loads of debris to the dumpster. As the trash passed through his hands, Peter began to question our building practices, and began noticing trends in building failure.
At that point, Peter had climbed the Pyramid’s of Giza, roamed the Coliseum, put his hands on ancient cave paintings, and yet somehow he was disposing of structures less than ten years old. The striking contrast was unsettling, it appeared as if humanity had forgotten how to build. His concern would follow him when he returned to college, and into his career as a lawyer.
Since beginning his practice of law in 2021, Peter has exclusively worked on construction issues: from representing builders, subcontractors, and design professionals, to representing many hundreds of property owners across the state of Florida. Peter has worked on notable litigation including the collapse of Champlain Towers and has brought countless claims against the nation’s largest homebuilders. Through these cases, Peter realized that the concept of value engineering had infected the construction industry—while the provision of shelter and protection were once the primary motivation to build—now it is profit.
Peter’s sleeves are always rolled up, ready to swing a hammer in court and on the jobsite. Peter is the lawyer who will get on your roof, crawl through your attic, and dig until he has uncovered your problem—so that when he goes to court he actually knows your issues, the solution, and what is legally owed. When he’s not working, Peter enjoys caring for his autistic brothers, spearfishing, and honing his wilderness survival skills.
